A Brief History of Cool Leggings
Leggings have a varied and unique history throughout the United States and the rest of the world. Originally introduced in Scotland during the 14th century, these were worn in two pieces and put on each leg. Later, leggings were worn by knights during the 15th and 16th century and made from leather. In the 19th century, women started wearing leggings for around the home. It wasn't until the 20th century that leggings became a staple item worn for fashion and style.
When Leggings Became Stylish
In the 80s, there was a huge fitness and aerobics craze. Gym and workout clothes, including leggings, started becoming fashionable. Leggings became one of the style pieces that hallmarked fashion during that decade. Towards the end of the 80s and start of the 90s, leggings were worn as standard every day clothing. Lycra, Spandex, and other material made leggings more durable. In the 1990s, leggings started outselling jeans. This trend continues today. In Canada during the last three years, sales of jeans have declined by about 7% according to the Financial Post.
Today, leggings are more fashionable than ever before. They are comfortable for leisure and even look attractive in certain formal situations. Leggings are great for yoga, workouts, and evenings at home. Women have played an important role in the leggings style revolution and will continue evolving the coolest of all fashion trends.
